Roof Tile Rake Maintenance

What do you see wrong with this picture?

This tile roof was newly installed by a contractor that did not take the time to prime and pre-paint the rake and eave. Does anyone wonder why this is a concern? First of all simple logic is the boards on the ground or sawhorses can be primed and paint easier than on a ladder. The other almost impossible thing to do now is paint behind the rake tile leaving bare wood if you don’t.

It is the small details that make a roof “A Better Roof”. This picture was sent to me on Sept. 18, 2014, by a frustrated homeowner. I see no out-riggers. This is so important on a tile roof that weighs from 600 – 1,000 pounds a sq. That is so heavy, that soon this overhang will start to sag and cause other problems. The previous roof probably failed because of this and needed to be corrected but this contractor came up short. I see the gutter came up short so maybe the roof originally did not have an overhang but changing or adding this barge rafter without framing supports will fail again. Outriggers These should be installed about every 4 feet.

I know it may sound picky but with just a little effort an OK job can be great. The miter cut at the ridge is way off and would drive me crazy. The nails attaching the short fascia to the barge rafter are not lined up and the gutter should be extended to complete the roofing gutter system on this roof. Tile roofs without bird stop allow all kinds of odd creatures to access the underside of a roof.

A Better Roof can be had with some attention to detail.
