Nailing asphalt shingles

Speed nailing may be fun for showing off, but it is bad for producing quality work. I see this all the time. Roofs poorly nailed blow off very easily. I speak from experience, you can’t nail shingles with lightning speed and position the nails properly. Any idiot can shoot gun-nails fast but it takes a real journeyman to nail shingles accurately with speed. Here is the proof below, what happens when nailing went out of control. It’s just a bad job that won’t perform well in high winds.

The blue spots are where the nails should be placed but in this case, are too high as seen in the white circles.  Nailing shingles correctly is required by manufacturers.

Most call-backs for warranty repairs are voided by the manufactures when poorly nailed shingles are discovered. For correct nailing read the back of the shingle wrappers. A full explanation of instruction is in print. For the DIYers, slow down and nail the shingles correctly. You may even want to think about increasing the number of nails to six from four, this gives you a higher wind warranty in most cases with a small amount of effect.
